POST: Land Rights Provincial Coordinator

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Land Rights Provincial Coordinator to join the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) Office in order to work with churches and faith based organisations contributing solutions to problems faced by farm workers, farm dwellers, farmers and landless people in this province. Taking into account learnings from the past three years, this position involves informing church leaders and activists on problems related to land and natural resources policies. Other tasks will include helping them to be actively engaged in developing better policies, working with social movements and other land marginalized groups, working with farmers and farm dwellers on rights and responsibilities, promoting secure and equitable land rights, carrying out research, documenting and disseminating information on land issues, promoting knowledge driven interventions in the land sector, promoting peace and justice in regards to land issues in KZN.

 About KZNCC:

KZNCC is a fellowship of churches and church based organisations in KwaZulu-Natal. KZNCC is affiliated to the South African Council of Churches (SACC). The KZNCC and its members and partners cooperate to express their Christian faith, identify and respond to the challenges in the province and ensure peace, justice, equality, human rights and integrity of creation. In this way we contribute to empowering all who are spiritually, socially and economically marginalised.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Working with church leaders and the ecumenical movement to input on the formation of land policies as well as monitoring their implementation to ensure that they promote equality, justice and peace.

2. Helping the ecumenical movement to learn from the people affected by land issues, and to offer solidarity.

3. Researching and disseminating information on land issues to churches and affected people in accessible language.

4. Promoting peace and justice in the context of land tensions, conflicts and farm killings in KZN.

5. Supporting the building of social movements in their struggles for land access and for strengthened land governance.

6. Organizing capacity building events for communities to strengthen their engagement to ensure peace and justice on land issues, including promoting establishment of local Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms (AVP, NVC)

7. Preparing narrative reports and supporting continuous monitoring and evaluation processes.

8. Facilitating processes of provincial social, political and economic analysis to inform lobbying and advocacy processes.

9. Assisting the CEO in fundraising for the program.

Required qualifications and work experience

  1. 3-year Tertiary Degree (Law, Sociology, Theology will be an advantage). Or 5 years’ experience and good track record on coordinating similar work.

  2. Effective verbal and written communication in English. Ability to understand speak isiZulu will be an advantage.

  3.  Three years experience in working with Civil Society Organizations

Required skills and qualities

  1. Proactive, takes initiative and able to manage self and have good interpersonal and communication skills;

  2. Capacity to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines;

  3. Good analytical and IT skills (Microsoft office packages);

  4. A good listener and learner from local experiences of democratic praxis;

  5. Understanding the living politics and theory of social movements;

  6. Willing and able to travel frequently to rural and farm areas;

  7. Enjoying working as part of a team, sharing responsibility and trust;

  8. Good knowledge of human rights issues and land question in South Africa;

  9. Comfortable to hold meetings and network with new people and communicate with a variety of people ranging from bishops, government officials and politicians, to activists and youth.

  10. A valid driver’s licence

Timeframe: An initial 3-year contract will be offered. Should resources be available and performance satisfactory, contract may be renewed.

Remuneration: R 260 000 – R325 000 per annum.
